Having joined the European Union (EU) in 2004, the Czech Republic is a highly developed economy and the employment rate is high and was steadily increasing prior to the pandemic. Structural reform priorities include making the labor market more fluid and inclusive, enhancing R&D investment, reforming the pension system and improving public sector efficiency through consolidation of local government services.

Doing Business in Czech Republic

The process of opening a company can be more cumbersome than most OECD countries and innovation activity is moderate. There is scope to make R&D support a lot better. That said, CzechInvest, the business and investment development agency, plays a key role in supporting business and investments. Download PDF

This may include remuneration, benefits, mutual rights and obligations as well as overtime and travel. Employment Law

Generally, it is the Labour Code which applies and covers all employment relations between employer and employee. Employee protection provided by the Code is based on international standards.

Employment agreement
A contract of employment must include certain prerequisites such as the type of work to be performed, the place of work and start date. Even though the Code does not specify that the agreement should be in writing, Council Directive 91/533/EEC of 14 October 1991 requires employers to provide employees with a written statement of the terms and conditions of employment.

Working conditions
Regulations concerning overtime cover all employees in an employment relationship and are contained in the Labour Code. Overtime work must be performed outside the established shifts.

Leaves
The employer decides the period when an employee takes their annual leave but is required to enable the employee to take the full four or five weeks of leave to which they are entitled within the respective calendar year. There are also other leave entitlements as set out in the Code.

Employment termination
Termination of employment is accomplished by agreement concerning severance of the employment relationship, notice of dismissal, immediate cancellation as well as cancellation during the probation period.
